Introduction to PALS Conference

By: Jereme King

The UMMC Resuscitation Training Center is now assisting with a program designed to enhance pediatric emergency care—the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Conference. This innovative training initiative is specifically tailored for current pediatric residents, providing them with hands-on experience in managing critical situations.

The PALS Conference builds upon essential PALS course concepts, allowing residents to explore and practice life-saving techniques through immersive mock code blue scenarios. These high-fidelity simulations help trainees refine their ability to assess and respond to pediatric emergencies, with a particular focus on recognizing and treating cardiac arrhythmias. By reinforcing rapid decision-making, teamwork, and advanced resuscitation skills, the conference aims to improve patient outcomes in real-world situations.

Dr. Nathan Alexander, assistant professor of pediatrics in the School of Medicine, emphasized the importance of the conference, stating, “The training center has become an essential part of our resident education. Multiple residents have shared how much more comfortable they are with the equipment required to run a code. I believe our residents are significantly more prepared to care for critically ill patients due to our PALS Conference.”

With the launch of the PALS Conference, UMMC continues its commitment to excellence in medical education and pediatric care, ensuring that the next generation of physicians is well-equipped to save lives when every second counts.
